The Market Abuse Directive (MAD) was designed to raise standards of securities market integrity throughout the EU and is based on transparency and equal treatment of market participants, requiring closer cooperation and more information exchange between competent home authorities. It was the first so-called Lamfalussy Directive even though the original proposal did not benefit from the current practice of substantial pre-legislative consultation.
