Taking stock of Germany's EU Presidency





The German Government drew a balance outlining five central aspects of its Presidency. The latest Eurobarometer poll shows impressively that at the end of the German Presidency approval of the EU has reached the highest level in 10 years. Some 57% of EU citizens think their country's EU membership is a good thing.

At the same time a large number of major decisions were taken in the EU . The German Presidency's positive overall record can be summed up in five central spheres:

1. The adoption of the Berlin Declaration and the agreement on treaty reform mean that the EU's capability to act has been guaranteed long-term.

2. The EU's role as a global player is of increasing importance.

3. The decisions in the sphere of climate and energy policy.

4. In the sphere of justice and home affairs, Europe has reaffirmed its determination to contain illegal immigration in the context of its dialogue with countries of origin and transit, as well as to improve the framework for legal migration.

5. The German Presidency gave top priority to strengthening both the social dimension in Europe and competitiveness.
