EZA 911 Report: German Politics – Election Update

  •  The 30Aug state elections in three small German states resulted in sharp losses for chancellor Angela Merkel’s governing CDU and gains for the Left party.
  • Although the three states combined account for only 10% of the German population, the vote had a signalling effect, undermining Merkel’s low profile campaign strategy and casting doubts on her chances of governing with the FDP after the general elections.
  • Still, on balance the chances of a centre right coalition after the federal elections have increased.

Please see attached 3 page update as part of our series of election primers.
