EZA 681: Germany - Banking Sector - update

11 May 2005

Germany; Banking Sector - update
The German banking system is undergoing profound change The pace of consolidation in the banking sector – notably among savings banks – temporarily abated during the last twelve months. Generally the public sector do not expect significant changes from the expiry of state guarantees 18Jul, given the A+ rating of their deposit insurance funds. While Basle II may foster further forms of cooperation among banks, refocusing private business remains a major challenge for public sector banks. The sale of the Berlin state bank and the commitment of the new Schleswig-Holstein state government to open savings banks for private capital could mark the softening of the boundaries between public and private sector banks.
