The 30Aug state elections in three small German states resulted in sharp losses for chancellor Angela Merkel’s governing CDU and gains for the Left party.
Although the three states combined account for only 10% of the German population, the vote had a signalling effect, undermining Merkel’s low profile campaign strategy and casting doubts on her chances of governing with the FDP after the general elections.
Still, on balance the chances of a centre right coalition after the federal elections have increased.
