ABBL: Luxembourg's banks adopt 3D Secure Enhancing security for online payments

With online payments increasing all the time, Luxembourg's banks have decided to adopt 3D Secure technology and make credit card payments safer for merchants and online shoppers alike.

3D Secure is an internationally recognised identification standard for online payments, which is already in use in many European countries. User-friendly and completely free for consumers, the new system requires the user to enter a personal password and is applied to all online payments made using Visa and/or MasterCard credit cards on websites that employ 3D Secure, indicated by the “MasterCard SecureCode” and/or “Verified by Visa” logos. On merchant websites that do not use the new system, payment takes place as before, meaning that users do not have to enter a password.

Based on cardholder authentication for online transactions, 3D Secure will help to curb substantially attempted identity theft and boost confidence in internet payments. In Luxembourg, 3D Secure will be activated on 24 September 2012.
