The European Payments Council released the version 5.0 of its White paper on mobile payments, which had been subject to a public consultation in 2016. The white paper aims to contribute to the evolution of an integrated market for mobile payments across the Single Euro Payments Area.
It informs stakeholders, including Payment Service Providers (PSPs), mobile network operators, merchants and any interested party, about the EPC’s commitment to harmonised mobile payments in SEPA.
Compared to the version published in 2012, the updated white paper includes new types of mobile proximity payments while addressing also the new stakeholders and technologies that entered the mobile ecosystem since 2012. The white paper provides an analysis of how mobile ecosystems could evolve and interact to support SEPA card payments and SEPA credit transfers. It further incorporates new use cases based on the EPC SEPA Instant Credit Transfer scheme.
The new version 5.0 of the document integrates the comments received through the public consultation while it has also been aligned with the new version 8.0 of the SEPA Cards Standardisation Volume.
The document aims to be an informative read to any party interested in mobile payments by using a non-technical language and to inform about the EPC's views on mobile payments in SEPA.
