WSJ: Poland wants to influence eurozone's shape


The Polish government has stressed proper structural preparations in Poland are needed before euro accession can take place, to ensure pitfalls are avoided.

The Polish government’s European Union policy will focus on issues related to increasing the stability and security of institutions that Poland will join in the future, now that the bloc’s 2014-2020 budget has essentially been agreed, Poland’s deputy foreign affairs minister said in an interview.

Under the terms of its accession to the EU, Poland must eventually join the euro. However, the financial crisis that has crippled the European economy has dented Poles’ initial enthusiasm for deeper EU integration, and less than one third of the population is currently in favour of replacing the zloty with the euro.

Poland wants to have a say on the details of the proposed banking union for the currency bloc, especially the way the single supervisor will work and how the winding down of a failing bank will be handled by the planned single resolution mechanism.
