Rajoy: A State unable to guarantee the sustainability of its public accounts cannot guarantee the rights of its citizens

Mariano Rajoy stressed that reducing the public deficit and implementing structural reforms are the basic instruments for "improving the economic situation, growth and job creation, thereby ensuring higher revenue for the public authorities and hence improving public services".

The President of the Government defended the policies implemented by the government, stressing that, despite the difficulties being faced, "healthcare remains universal and free, and education in Spain remains universal and free". As regards the criticism made by the leader of the opposition to the labour reform, he claimed that "if it had been in effect for the last few years, you can be totally and utterly certain that Spain would not have seen three million jobs shed between 2008 and 2011".

The President of the Government highlighted that the Spanish mortgage market has provided access to many people to own their own home, "more than 80 per cent of Spaniards now own their own home and in many cases this has been achieved through cheap financing with long-term interest rates". Under these circumstances, "it is not appropriate to improvise as this would distort the normal operation of this market when the economy starts to improve".

Furthermore, he underlined that "the majority of evictions are not in relation to primary residences. Many relate to commercial premises, industrial warehouses, residential homes and companies. Eviction is the last resort for financial institutions and for those who rent out a property and many mortgage loans are being refinanced". He reiterated that the government is open to "considering any change in the law that is fair, reasonable and sensible, and if indeed that is the case, we will approve it".
