A global digital tax deal will probably need to wait until after the U.S. election, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s Secretary-General Angel Gurría said today.
While most of the groundwork could be done before Americans head to the polls on November 3, the political reticence of the U.S. administration about a tax they perceive as discriminatory against their digital giants is likely to impede a deal before then, Gurría said in an interview at POLITICO’s Competitive Europe summit.
“Everybody has the other eye to the U.S. election. Not just for tax purposes … but for a host of reasons,” Gurría said, adding: “This is an element which may slow down the proceedings. We can have [everything] ready by October, all the elements in place, but [they] of course probably will require to see the results. Once that is known … there will be less … uncertainty.”
