With the Commission set to soon unveil important new plans in the ongoing process of overhauling the EU’s and the international tax architecture, MEPs of the economic and monetary affairs committee fed into the process during an hour-long meeting with Mr Gentiloni.
MEPs on Monday discussed EU and international tax reform with European Commissioner for the economy Paolo Gentiloni.
Mr Gentiloni said that although the road
ahead was not straightforward, the context presented by the pandemic
and the need to urgently raise public revenues worldwide presented a
momentum never which had never been had before.
MEPs largely focussed on the EU digital
levy set to be proposed by the Commission in July. They also questioned
the Commissioner on work on corporate taxation, warning that pitfalls
that had scuppered earlier initiatives needed to be avoided. Questions
were also asked about whether the 6 countries having received tax reform
recommendations from the Commission had put forward any reforms in this
area in their national reform programmes.
