Polish President: Stronger EU answer to crisis

Polish President Bronisław Komorowski said at a meeting with the leaders of the Visegrad Group countries, France and Germany that the answer to the crisis is a stronger EU and a stronger euro.

Komorowski reminded that the EU was going through a difficult period marked by unemployment, political instability and waning trust in the continent's political elites. “Our answer to the crisis in European countries should be to strengthen the EU, its institutions and its common currency, which has become a part of the European identity.”

The Polish president stressed that the EU should put its reforms through "with determination" despite the fact that they might be painful, as in the long run this will boost economic growth, secure new jobs and give hope to coming generations. He also spoke out for strengthening Europe's defence potential, European foreign policy and cooperation between the EU and NATO.

Speaking out against divisions in the EU, Komorowski noted that only unity will allow Europe to master the challenges which lie ahead. "These are challenges which we will be only able to cope with together. For me our meeting today is proof of a unity striven for by many generations of Europeans. Let us not waste their efforts by divisions within the community. Instead, let us do all we can to make it stronger as a whole", the president appealed.
