The latest draft of the statement European Council’s president Herman van Rompuy will submit to European governments for approval, ahead of the EU summit to be held June 26/27
A leaked draft of Van Rompuy's policy orientation for the European Council summit was released on June 23rd. The draft sets the scene for the future direction of the Union. It notes "Though the recovery in Europe is gaining pace, unemployment is still our highest concern." And it presses the point that there are many challenges ahead (e.g. demographic ageing, energy dependency, global competition etc.) Moreover, Member states' focus 'over the coming years must be to equip our societies for the future and to foster confidence.'
