The probable removal of Mario Monti from the Italian Premiership is exquisitely badly timed for the EU.
But he may well have had time to create an enduring, positive legacy for both Italy and the European Union. On the current timetable for the Italian Budget vote, Monti will remain Prime Minister of Italy during the key EU Summit votes and on the two-pack. But the Italian electorate will soon be faced with a binary choice about sound economic policies OR chaos - for itself and Europe.
