Hostage-taking' is the expression the Swiss newspaper La Nouvelliste borrows from a European diplomat to describe Switzerland's situation with regard to Brexit.
According to the article, the uncertainty of Brexit negotiations have put Switzerland in a tricky position vis-à-vis the European Union. In the past, Switzerland and the EU have been able to negotiate many agreements on a case-by-case basis, much to the benefit of Switzerland. The country now fears that Brexit will put an end to the EU's generosity as it will likely have to avoid a situation where similar concessions would be made to the United Kingdom. A second referendum would therefore be Bern's dream scenario. And the worst?... Clearly an exit from Europe without an agreement.
