The EP today adopted a report setting out its opinion on EU rules governing financial assistance to non-euro area EU Member States, ahead of a review of the rules.
The Greens welcomed the report, which underlined the need for a more balanced and democratic framework for financial assistance. After the vote, Green economic affairs spokesperson Eva Joly said:
"The European Parliament has today sent a strong signal to EU governments on the need to provide a more balanced and democratic framework for financial assistance programmes to non-euro EU members. This implies guaranteeing protection of basic social rights under the programmes, as well as ensuring transparency and accountability.
"The EP has made clear that there should be consistency in the rules applying to euro and non-euro members in receipt of financial assistance, this means applying improvements in the recently-adopted 'two pack' to non-euro members as well. The European Commission and EU Member States must take this into account."
