In a Belgian Parliament meeting, the Prime Minister Charles Michel said he hopes that Brexit negotiations will result in the UK having a ‘CETA plus plus’ trade deal, citing the recently agreed Canadian deal as a good source of inspiration.
Mr Michel said he wanted to play a "pro-active role" from the start to reach an agreement that will allow Belgium to maintain "as solid trade relations as possible" with the other side of the Channel. However, the mention of CETA brings back memories of the fierce opposition to the deal from Wallonia, where majority-holding PS-cdH who were in power at the time, threatened to block the adoption of the text.
