SPD party congress – reformers between a rock and a hard place
The SPD party congress on 27/28Oct rubber stamped the dilution of the economic reform agenda as expected.
But rather than a u-turn on economic politics this is seen as an opportunistic move to deflect pressure from the left wing to yield to frustration in public opinion about weak incomes
Until 2009 demand for social spending is likely to undermine the chances of maintaining budget balance, but after the 2009 federal elections economic pressure will prevail.
