The Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of the UK-based Reuters Group by Thomson Corporation of Canada, subject to conditions and obligations.
Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said: "The merging parties have offered a remedies package that provides strong safeguards that users of financial data will not be harmed by this major consolidation."
To obtain clearance, Thomson has agreed to sell a copy of the Thomson Fundamentals (Worldscope) database and Reuters has agreed to sell a copy of the Reuters Estimates, Reuters Aftermarket Research and Reuters Economics (EcoWin) databases. The sales include copies of the databases, source data and training materials, as well as certain contracts and employees connected to the databases.
The closing of transaction and the launch of thomson reuters is planned for the week of April 13.
