Delors Centre's Thu Nguyen: The EU's Hungary problem

The upcoming Hungarian Council Presidency sparks a lot of criticism. But although the prospect of a Council Presidency led by the Orbán government is understandably uncomfortable, in practice, it will do little harm.

More important is another question: How to deal with a EU member state like Hungary – a member that is persistently breaching the principles of the rule of law and that no longer wants to play by the rules of the game agreed in the beginning – in the long term.

In her article for the magazine Internationale Politik, Thu Nguyen analyses the EU's Hungary problem, which extends far beyond the upcoming Council Presidency (in German).
