The All-Party Parliamentary Group on EU Relations, led by the Conservative former business minister Anna Soubry and former Labour frontbencher Chuka Umunna, called on the government to keep the U.K. in the customs union permanently to avoid “a reckless and economically dangerous self-inflicted wound.” [...]
The report by the cross-party group, which includes anti-Brexit MPs from the Conservatives, Labour, the Liberal Democrats, the Scottish National Party and Wales’ Plaid Cymru, said that leaving the customs union would hit the U.K. economy to the tune of £25 billion a year and more than double the number of firms forced to make customs declarations.
Their report also warned of gridlock at U.K. ports and airports, predicting that the government has not factored in enough time to set up a new, functioning customs system, and is critical of the government’s position paper, calling it “overly optimistic to the point of being irresponsible.” [...]
