IMA: UK investors wary of eurozone debt crisis

Richard Saunders, CEO of the Investment Management Association (IMA), says that the research into investor perspectives shows that retail investors remain wary, citing the eurozone debt crisis as the key factor likely to impact their investment returns in the year ahead.

Richard Saunders, Chief Executive of the Investment Management Association (IMA), comments on UK investors’ current exposure to the eurozone and provides his views on IMA research, looking at where UK investors plan to invest during 2012 and the regions they believe will deliver the best returns. “Our statistics show that UK investors have a low exposure to debt originating in those eurozone countries which have attracted attention recently, such as Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain. However, history shows that UK investors tend to hold their investments in periods of volatility. This is backed up by our most recent statistics, which show fund sales slowing but remaining in positive territory. Indeed, almost two-thirds of UK investors plan to add to their portfolios over the course of the next year. These investors appear to believe the UK will be a safe haven in a climate of increasing market volatility, with around half saying they plan to invest in the UK.”
