Polish, Italian, German presidents hope for EU budget compromise


In a joint appeal, Bronislaw Komorowski, Giorgio Napolitano and Joachim Gauck stressed that investments in sustainable development were the best way to support prosperity and stability in Europe.

President Komorowski said that "Poland is interested in a successful conclusion of the EU summit". "Quicker establishment of the financial framework means quicker availability of the funds which for Poland are a significant source of economic development and a support for Poland's over twenty-year-long growth", Poland's president said.

President Napolitano stressed that due to the financial crisis the EU had focused on itself for the last two years. "We must reconsider our ability to open the EU anew." In this context he mentioned the EU-aspiring Balkan states and the Ukraine.

President Gauck stressed that his country had understood that Poland "is a champion of European ideas, both for political and economic reasons". "We admire the country's ability to reform", the German president added.
