FT: Greek PM Samaras reshuffles cabinet in bid to avert snap election

Greek prime minister Antonis Samaras reshuffled his cabinet, aiming to avert a snap election and keep the country's international bailout on track after a junior coalition partner quit last week over the closure of the state broadcaster.

Evangelos Venizelos, leader of the PanHellenic Socialist Movement (Pasok), joined the government as deputy premier and foreign minister after a year of backing the coalition’s reform effort from behind the scenes. Three senior Pasok politicians were also given cabinet posts.

The reshuffle came three days after the small Democratic Left party pulled out of the coalition, leaving Mr Samaras’s centre right New Democracy party and Pasok with only a three-seat majority in parliament.

However, Mr Samaras and Mr Venizelos were expected to make a joint commitment to continue structural reforms already agreed with the EU and the International Monetary Fund, while ruling out further wage and pension cuts.

Yannis Stournaras, the technocratic finance minister, and his two deputy ministers who are responsible for budget supervision and tax collection, kept their posts.
