Dispute over EU Financial Reform Plans resolved

-
The Lamfalussy programme for speeding European Union financial reforms appears set for final approval in the European parliament next week, following an 11-month power struggle between the parliament and the European Commission.

The two sides agreed that Romano Prodi, the Commission president, would give a declaration in the parliament next Tuesday guaranteeing the assembly greater accountability and transparency over secondary legislation envisaged under the Lamfalussy plan.

Next week's approval would give new impetus to next month's summit in Barcelona which is aimed at breathing new life into the EU's faltering plans, agreed in March 2000, to turn the EU into the world's most competitive economy by the end of the decade.
