Better regulation: Commission intends to withdraw one third of screened proposals

The European Commission delivered more results from its better regulation initiative. The Commission has screened all Commission proposals pending before the Council and the Parliament that predate 1 January 2004. After screening 183 proposals for EU laws pending at the European Parliament and Council, the Commission has decided to announce to scrap more than a third (68). Some of the proposals are inconsistent with the objectives of the new Partnership for Growth and Jobs (Lisbon) or do not meet better regulation standards. Others are not advancing in the legislative process, or are simply outdated.

The Commission will submit far-reaching proposals to simplify existing EU legislation in October. The objective is to screen existing legislation in view of its modernisation. The Commission will set up a three year action program. The intention is to put substantially more emphasis on the economic aspects. The Commission intends to focus on the automotive, construction and the waste sector, but other sectors will follow.
