Minister tells Brussels not to use legislation to tamper with schemes

-Ruth Kelly, economic secretary to the Treasury, told the Centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels that the EU must not use single market legislation to tamper with British pensions systems. Whilst the treasury backed plans in the pensions directive to secure mutual recognition of schemes it would not allow this to become a backdoor for 'harmonisation'. She warned the European Commission that increasing the regulation surrounding pension schemes could actually undermine the EU's job-creation agenda by increasing pension costs.
