Politico: EU to push green finance, rules-based trade at international talks

10 April 2020

EU finance ministers pledged in a document approved today, seen by POLITICO, to raise the subjects of carbon and energy taxes in the international meetings as part of a “strategic long-term vision for a climate-neutral economy.”

European officials will push for action on green finance and renew calls to fight protectionism next week in global talks on how to fight the economic crisis brought on by the coronavirus.

The meetings include a G20 videoconference of ministers and central bankers on Wednesday, along with other meetings held by the International Monetary Fund and World Bank over the week. The institutions moved the Washington sessions online due to the coronavirus.

The nonpublic document sets out common lines for EU representatives to take. “Key discussions include the mobilization of sustainable finance while striving for consistency across jurisdictions,” according to the document, referred to as Europe’s “terms of reference” for the meetings.
