17 June 2014

The FT reports that David Cameron’s campaign to head off Jean Claude Juncker's election is facing its most serious challenge. Meanwhile Le Monde reports that Van Rompuy will recommend Juncker to the European Council.

According to the FT, Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, has told EU leaders she fears an extended fight over the candidacy of the former Luxembourg prime minister for European Commission president and “now favours moving very promptly to appointing Juncker”, according to its sources.

Le Monde cites sources that Von Rompuy will propose Juncker's nomination. The decision could be made at the 26-27 June European Council summit, or at an informal dinner of EU leaders early July. The Paper also notes David Cameron's recent intervention on Friday June 13th, opposing him and claiming Juncker has no electoral legitimacy.
