European Voice reports on the behind scenes jockeying for position between the Spanish and Dutch over the Chair of the Eurogroup:
Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the Dutch finance minister, has said that he intends to serve out his full term as head of the Eurogroup, in a further setback to Spain’s ambitious plan to parachute its economy minister into the job.
“My term ends in July next year [and] I am determined to end that term,” Dijsselbloem told the committee on economic and monetary affairs on Thursday 4 September.
Dijsselbloem’s statement ends months of speculation that he may be forced to give up the position before the end of his term – speculation that was accompanied by intense Spanish lobbying to obtain the position of chairman of the Eurogroup for Luis de Guindos, Spain’s minister for the economy and competitiveness.
