EV: Cyprus leaders to speed up reunification talks

18 September 2014

The leaders of the Greek and Turkish communities on Cyprus have agreed to accelerate talks that are supposed to lead to the re-unification of the divided island in the eastern Mediterranean.

European Voice reports on talks to accelerate negotiations:

Nicos Anastasiades, the president of the internationally recognised Republic of Cyprus and leader of its Greek community, and Derviş Eroğlu, the leader of the Turkish Cypriots, met in the United Nations-controlled buffer zone in the divided capital, Nicosia, yesterday (17 September) to assess the state of settlement talks and chart a way ahead. Anastasiades and Eroğlu also agreed to seek an end to the island’s 40-year division by meeting at least twice a month. The two leaders had met the previous evening for dinner.

The latest round of talks followed the conclusion of a phase in which the two sides submitted proposals on each issue area into which the negotiations are divided.
