President Barroso meets President Cavaco Silva and announces agreement on EIB's funding for Portuguese SMEs

The Presidents discussed the economic situation in Portugal and in Europe, and the progress achieved by the ongoing Economic Adjustment Programme.

The President of Portugal thanked President Barroso for his efforts in supporting Portugal in its endeavours to overcome the current economic crisis.

Following the meeting, President Barroso announced an agreement between the European Commission, the European Investment Bank and the Portuguese authorities to facilitate EIB's funding for the country's small and medium enterprises.

Regarding the Portuguese economy, President Barroso said that much has been achieved to address the country's problems. He said that conditions are being put in place for a sustainable recovery. The President also said he is fully conscious of how hard the situation still remains for many Portuguese citizens and he highlighted their efforts. He said he is confident that Portugal is on the right track.

President Barroso praised the actions of the Portuguese authorities and the political and social consensus in the country. Furthermore, he reaffirmed his commitment to support the Portuguese government through the difficult period of economic reform and adjustment, with a view to ensure that Portugal emerges from the programme with its public finances in order, its economy more competitive and better placed to grow and create jobs.

The Presidents also addressed the employment situation in Portugal, in particular the situation of the young and long-term unemployed. President Barroso explained how the EU is planning to tackle youth unemployment, a top priority on his agenda.
