UK Government response to Brexit: parliamentary scrutiny report

The Government's response to the EU Committee's report on Brexit: parliamentary scrutiny has been received.

Background

Following the referendum on 23 June 2016, the House of Lords EU Committee published a report recommending that Parliament should be actively involved in scrutinising the forthcoming negotiations on Brexit. The Committee's report was published on 20 October 2016. Among the Committee's key finding were:

• The two Houses of Parliament should have an opportunity to vote on the Government's Brexit negotiation guidelines before Article 50 is triggered.
• Parliament in Westminster should have at least the same level of access to information relating to the negotiations as the European Parliament.
• Full parliamentary and democratic scrutiny of the negotiations would increase the likelihood of Parliament and the public accepting the final deal.
