The Irish Times: Brexistential crisis

20 July 2017

A House of Lords report warns that Brexit is already damaging political stability in Northern Ireland, reports the Irish Times.

The Lords’ Committee on EU Affairs report states that the decision to leave has exacerbated cross-community divisions in Northern Ireland, and goes as far as to call on the British government to reassure nationalists following the controversial DUP-Tory deal.
The abstentionist policy of nationalist Sinn Féin MPs is also cited as a factor which weakens Northern Ireland’s influence on the ongoing negotiations. The report, which analyses the effect of Brexit on devolution in Scotland and Wales as well as Northern Ireland, points out that Brexit poses an existential threat to the UK as EU law is interwoven in each of the devolution settlements.
