The newsletter includes an interview with Christine Lagarde on the consequences of recent events in global markets. She calls for increased mutual recognition of markets and intermediaries on both sides of the Atlantic.

“The financial turmoil merely strengthens the necessity for a better regulatory dialogue between Europe and the United States”, she says and underlines the need for a dialogue on crisis prevention and management. Also, changes in the financial industry, such as the recent and ongoing mergers of trading platforms, need to be accompanied by adequate supervisory changes, she noted.

“Stable and effective markets require effective regulation of international financial centres”, Mrs Lagarde states. “This calls for cooperation between securities commissions with regard to market surveillance and work on standards.”
