Speech Steinbrück: Europe – succeeding together

In a speech held in the German Federal Ministry of Finance, Mr Steinbrück, Federal Minister of Finance, laid out the plans for the trio presidency with Portugal and Slovenia extending over 18 months to summer 2008. “This will help guarantee the consistency, sustainability and convergence of our work in ECOFIN”, he said. “It will also serve as a good example for the coming trio presidencies.”

“We have agreed on the following three goals for the work in ECOFIN:

To ensure the efficient and effective management of fiscal and economic policy.

To take further steps towards completing the European Internal Market, in particular with regard to financial services and taxation.

To improve the quality of public finances in the EU.
