Graham Bishop's Blog: Saccomanni as Italy economics minister - Excellent news for Europe (and Italy)

29 April 2013

The appointment of Fabrizio Saccomanni as the new economics minister is a shrewd move that should reassure both financial markets and Europe.

At the Bank of Italy for decades, he has overseen Italy through many financial crises induced by wrong-headed government policies. At last, he has the chance to steer the policies as well. With his intimate knowledge of monetary union from the very beginning, his presence is the surest guarantee that Italian policies will be geared to remaining a full player in strengthening a `deep and genuine monetary union’.

As the euro area seems to be turning the corner of this crisis, it is comforting that long-standing and dedicated pro-Europeans have moved into key slots in two of the largest Member States.
