EP Committee adopted Common Position on Insurance Mediation

04 June 2002

-
EMAC Committee today adopted the Council Common Position on Insurance Mediation. Some 14 amendments were made to the Councils proposal, including some compromise agreements.

One adopted amendment (Art.1, par.2a (new)) allows Member States to decide freely whether to exempt insurance intermediaries of commercial risks from the requirements of the Directive.

The report is going to be voted in Parliament next week in Strasbourg. The debate will probably take place on Monday night.

Of the 50 amendments adopted at first reading, 20 were supported in full or in part by the Commission. The Common Position adopted by the Council of Ministers to a large extent follows the line taken by the European Parliament at first reading. It incorporated all but one of the amendments supported by the Commission, and also took into account two further amendments.
