Detailed Scrutiny of Current Issues + our Lite weekly e-mail
The Forum is designed to give our members the opportunity to contribute to the progress in creating a single financial market in the EU.
With major pieces of legislation being enacted in a single reading, this degree of scrutiny is necessary across the whole spectrum of financial services. Within this subscription, we complement the meetings with our Lite weekly e-mail newsletter to keep the nominated Forum members fully abreast of developments.
Method: The European Finance Forum enables its members to exchange experiences and information on issues related to financial services in the EU, as well as debating these topics with representatives of the European institutions.
Briefing Forum: This is organised in Brussels by Graham Bishop, with senior representatives of the European Commission, Members of the European Parliament, Member State governments, the European Council and other institutions involved. They comment on topics of current legislative activity, followed by a roundtable discussion with Forum participants. The resulting debate between the actual policymakers themselves, as well as with key private sector players, is often intense. These discussions are designed to check that the goals set out in financial services legislation are being met in practice – right down to the fine details of all the regulations. Membership is only open to financial services companies and relevant professional associations so that members have the opportunity to give their responses directly to policy-makers.
Notes are not prepared as we have found that speakers are increasingly keen to talk under Chatham House rules - which permit participants to use the information gained but not to say who said it or where.
Synthesis and Updates: This is provided by the weekly Lite e-mail newsletter from Graham Bishop, listing key developments and observations on financial services legislation in Europe. Our weekly e-mail is widely acknowledged to have the broadest scope, and to be a prime source for Brussels “insiders”. It will flag major studies from trade associations and other experts, as well as the relevant papers published by the European institutions, our clients and writers of Briefs and Blogs.
Background to financial reform: Financial markets have already seen a huge wave of regulatory proposals and rapid action as a result of the decisions by the G20 Heads of Government - and it is not over yet! So the stage is set for profound changes in financial regulation in the next few years – in consumer protection as well as further changes for capital markets as the detailed level 2 legislation flows through. Reflecting the broad scope of our monitoring service, the Forum will cover many of these issues – but focus on practical details.
The Programme: Dates and topics are set provisionally for times when ECON is meeting in Brussels. Topics of the meeting are subject to current developments so are finalised closer to the actual meeting date to ensure topicality. Current programme
Participants: come from the banking, insurance, and financial services industry and we aim to have a broad geographic spread. We also have a good attendance from other official institutions as well as from Perm Reps.
