CPD Weekly: 10 Minute Read ‘n Verify
MiFID II comes into force in January 2018 and requires many investment professionals to be knowledgeable and competent - by holding a qualification; having proper experience; verifying that they undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and that firms record all this for their Competent Authority. The drive to deepen EMU and complete Financial Union suggests that ESMA will become the single supervisor of capital markets and will enforce a single rulebook in this field within a few years.
Our standard weekly e-mail on EU financial services regulation is famed for its “5-minute read” format. Each article has a headline of up to 140 characters, with an additional strap-line up to 300 characters. The link takes you into a more detailed article in our database if your subscription level supports that access.
We have now revised our website structure so that it maps easily and directly onto the ESMA requirements within our field of expertise. We have launched our CPD Weekly “10 Minute Read ‘n Verify” to meet all these requirements for keeping an investment professional “well-rounded”. Graham Bishop personally will draw upon his experience of more than 130 “Brussels4Breakfast” monthly events to select the 30-40 most important and relevant news items each week - in a succinct, verifiable format of perhaps 1500 words.
When reflecting upon such a brief `scan of the horizon' each week, the alert professional should notice anything particularly relevant to their own daily business and use the links to drill down into the more detailed article on the subject. The surrounding material in our knowledge centre should enable that professional to research the new development and initiate any appropriate follow-up action such as attending a course on that specific subject. The weekly "read" is a simple yet effective way of allocating a total of one business day per year to spotting some directly relevant news, rather than attending a seminar for a day which may well be on entirely different subjects thus missing the vital clue. Additionally, a corporate subscriber can set up individualised e-mails weekly etc for only the categories in which they are interested.
By taking the short test available at the foot of the e-mail, the reader can easily verify to their employer (or professional qualification body) - perhaps via a Learning Management System – that they have indeed maintained their CPD requirement. Over a year, our “10 minutes a week” format will provide 7.5 hours of structured CPD.
