La Stampa published an op-ed by Sandro Gozi, Italy's State Secretary for European Affairs, in which he presents his country's priorities for the Brexit negotiations.
He also puts forward his vision for the EU after Brexit. In his analysis he refers to the implications the divorce has for free movement in Europe, which for Gozi remains an essential pillar of the European project. He also underlines that during the negotiations with the UK, Italy will not stop insisting on defending the rights of Italian citizens. While also reminding of the UK's financial obligations to the EU, Gozi finishes by saying that while managing the Brexit negotiations, the EU will nevertheless also have to look ahead and work on creating a closer link to citizens, becoming more democratic and more effective.
