The UK work and pensions secretary says that if MPs vote down the deal, ‘Brexiteers may lose their Brexit.’
The U.K. parliament would block a no-deal scenario that could result in Britain crashing out of the European Union in a little over four months, said Amber Rudd, recently restored to Theresa May’s Cabinet.
The work and pensions secretary is the first Cabinet minister to publicly rule out a no-deal, undermining the choice May has presented to her backbenchers of “my deal or no deal” — hoping the threat of a damaging no-deal would focus MPs’ minds and persuade them to set aside their concerns and back her agreementl.
Rudd told BBC Radio’s Today program that she believes the agreement presented to Cabinet last week will be passed by the House of Commons, though she acknowledges MPs have concerns about aspects of it.
With dozens of Tory MPs and the Democratic Unionist Party saying they will vote against the deal, it looks very difficult for a vote to pass. Asked if the deal would be rejected, Rudd said: “No, I don’t accept that at all,” going on to warn that “if it doesn’t get through, anything could happen. The Brexiteers may lose their Brexit.”
Asked, in the event of May’s deal being voted down, if she sees a no-deal or another referendum, Rudd said: “It’s my view that parliament will stop no-deal. There isn’t a majority in the House of Commons to allow that to take place. I don’t think we are looking at another referendum.” [...]
