Algirdas Šemeta, the Commissioner responsible for Budgetary Discharge and with the responsibility for the IAS of the EC, addressed the Annual Conference of IIA Lithuania on 25 March 2011. Mr Šemeta spoke of the value that internal audit could add to the well being of an organisation.

In his presentation, Mr Šemeta stressed that the internal auditor’s role in organisations was vital, particularly in a time of economic recession and downturn. He spoke about the role of the European Commission's Internal Audit Service (IAS), for which he is also responsible, and the impact that it has had on the Commission over the 10 years that it has been in existence since the reforms set in place in 2000 and 2001. In fact he noted that the
IAS would be celebrating its 10th anniversary in the summer of this year.
He highlighted that the recommendations of the
IAS and also of the Internal Audit Components of the DGs have a significant impact on the work of the Commission and the way in which the budgetary expenditure process is controlled. In the same way outside the Commission internal auditors also have a key role to play in their organisations in helping them achieve their objectives and fighting against fraud.
