Spanish-Dutch rivalry over Eurogroup chair: Dijsselbloem staying as Chair

The jockeying for Chair of the Eurogroup looks to be settled with the Dutch Finance Minister seeing out his term, according to European Voice.

European Voice reports on the behind scenes jockeying for position between the Spanish and Dutch over the Chair  of the Eurogroup:

Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the Dutch finance minister, has said that he intends to serve out his full term as head of the Eurogroup, in a further setback to Spain’s ambitious plan to parachute its economy minister into the job.

“My term ends in July next year [and] I am determined to end that term,” Dijsselbloem told the committee on economic and monetary affairs on Thursday 4 September.

Dijsselbloem’s statement ends months of speculation that he may be forced to give up the position before the end of his term – speculation that was accompanied by intense Spanish lobbying to obtain the position of chairman of the Eurogroup for Luis de Guindos, Spain’s minister for the economy and competitiveness.
