Belgium has (3 September) nominated Marianne Thyssen, a Flemish centre-right member of the European Parliament, for the next European Commission.
The nomination takes the number of women in the next college to nine – the same number as in the college of 2009-14. It also completes the proposed membership of the college of commissioners, liberating Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the next Commission, to complete the allocation of portfolios and present his college to the European Parliament for approval.
