Tagesspiegel: What Strategy for Germany?

With the Brexit negotiations officially starting, Tagesspiegel comments on Germany's potential role in securing a good deal and future relationship.

The author argues that although Barnier is the one directly negotiating with the UK, the German government may use Theresa May's weakened position as a chance to be able to influence the diplomatic talks and have a say in parts of the deal, especially when it comes to trade and the rights of German workers in the UK.
The article adds that Germany may therefore play an active role in urging the EU to keep the UK close and in advancing European integration. However, Germany should avoid having the loudest voice in the EU, as it did in the refugee crisis or the Greek bailout. Instead, Merkel should follow the 'Helmut-Kohl Method', which means acting as a quiet but stable partner in the background and supporting the interests of other Member States and the UK.
