Writing in Monday's Daily Mirror, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn insists that the deal on the table "is an unparalleled and unacceptable loss of sovereignty, which Labour will not accept on behalf of our country"
Theresa May has finally united the country on Brexit – by bringing back a deal from Brussels which everyone dislikes.
The inequality, austerity and neglect that drove so many to vote for Brexit isn’t dealt with at all in this deal.
That is why Labour is opposed to the Government’s Brexit agreement and is determined we achieve a better deal for Britain’s workers and our country.
We have set out an alternative plan for a sensible jobs-first Brexit.
The Prime Minister’s deal leaves Britain’s businesses and workers in an even more uncertain state.
Labour would negotiate a permanent customs union with a UK say on future trade deals, which all but the hard-right privatisers think is necessary for our economy.
While claiming to take back control, the Government’s “backstop” risks locking Britain into an indefinite halfway house it cannot leave without the agreement of the EU.
This is an unparalleled and unacceptable loss of sovereignty, which Labour will not accept on behalf of our country.
Labour would negotiate a deal that guarantees our country does not fall behind the EU on workers’ rights, or protections for consumers and the environment.
We won’t let this Government use Brexit as an excuse for a race to the bottom in protections and to rip up rights at work, or expose our children to chlorinated chicken by running down standards.
We would also seek a sensible deal that guarantees a strong single market relationship.
A downgraded Canada-style deal is popular only on the extremes of the Tory party. It would be a risk to our economy, jobs and public services.
A good plan must also include a radical programme of investment and change.
Theresa May must now go back to Brussels and negotiate a better deal.
If she can’t or won’t do that, she must stand aside and let Labour negotiate a deal which works for the whole country and offers the stability and fairness people are crying out for.
