the U.S. Congress if London breaks its Brexit pact with the EU over the
Irish border, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi warned Wednesday.
“The Good Friday Agreement is the bedrock of peace in
Northern Ireland and an inspiration for the whole world,” Pelosi, a
Democrat, said in a statement.
“The U.K. must respect the Northern Ireland Protocol as
signed with the EU to ensure the free flow of goods across the border.
If the U.K. violates that international treaty and Brexit undermines the
Good Friday accord, there will be absolutely no chance of a U.S.-U.K.
trade agreement passing the Congress."
To emphasize her point, she added: ”The Good Friday
Agreement is treasured by the American people and will be proudly
defended in the United States Congress.”
Pelosi’s statement comes after the U.K. government presented a bill to row back on parts of the Withdrawal Agreement signed with the EU, thereby breaching international law....
