BEUC Comments on the Commission Communication on E-Commerce and Financial Services

-
In its comment BEUC, the European Consumer Organisation, does not agree with the Commissions opinion that financial services are perfectly adapted to e-commerce and that it is only the consumer who does not yet take the necessary action to trade on-line. They also strongly oppose the underlying message of the Commissions document, that consumers are deprived from the benefits of increased choice, more competition etc, (just) because there still are diverging rules of consumer protection in the market. The Commission apparently blames the minimum harmonization clauses in consumer policy directives for the fact that the Single market in financial services does not yet exist. They consider that this is a much too much simplistic perspective.
