Treasury Committee: Economists questioned on impact of mini-budget

The Treasury Committee are likely to use the session to explore the impact of the Chancellor’s Growth Plan, which has widely been labelled as a ‘mini-budget’, on the cost of borrowing, the value of the pound, and the current state of the markets.

Wednesday 12 October 2022, Wilson Room, Portcullis House

At 10.15am

  • Torsten Bell, Chief Executive, Resolution Foundation
  • Professor Jagjit S. Chadha, Director, National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR)
  • Paul Johnson, Director, Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS)
  • Sanjay Raja, Chief UK Economist, Deutsche Bank
  • Dr Gemma Tetlow, Chief Economist, Institute for Government (IfG)

Questions are likely on the fiscal position, plausibility and impact of potential spending cuts, the impact of the ‘mini-budget’ on household incomes, and the distributional impact of tax changes.

Committee members will discuss Government debt and borrowing, and the outlook for growth, inflation, interest rates and employment. MPs are also likely to explore the current state of the housing market.
